Designed by Michele Varian and made to order in NYC, each shade is hand-crafted from Belgian linen with solid brass detailing and armature. The imagery on each panel was first drawn and then cut and stitched in reverse applique of multiple layers of transparent and semi-transparent linen.
The box shade is the latest manifestation of the enormous semi-transparent scrims that Michele has used to subdivide and carve out space within the live/work loft space she shared with her husband. The scrims and now this pendant were inspired by Japanese screens and lanterns, inviting light to move through elements of nature, clouds, trees, mountains and birds.
